On Tuesday, the Vice President of America, Mike Pence had called on NASA to make a move and get astronauts to land on the moon’s surface within the next five years. While attending a meeting of the National Space Council in Huntsville, Ala, Pence even issued a warning. He said that if it is not possible for NASA to get astronauts over to the moon by the year 2024, then the organization would be changed but not the mission. He felt that NASA required to transform itself into a much more efficient organization. Otherwise, private industry would take its place.
Mike Pence further stressed on the fact that they are not really committed to only one contractor. If their present contractors cannot meet this particular objective, then the US Administration would find new ones. In case the American industry is able to provide critical commercial services without development in the government, then they would surely buy them. He has also clearly stated that if commercial rockets happen to be the only way to get Astronauts from America to the moon in five years’ time, then they would bank on commercial rockets only.
The Administrator from NASA, Jim Bridenstine has assured Pence by saying that the agency would work hard to meet up the deadline. He was confident that the Space Launch System would be ready for the job. This summer would mark the 50th anniversary of the first ever moon landing for the humans by the astronauts of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Mike Pence called it completely unacceptable that SLS delays, as well as the overruns in cost, would point out to a target date of 2028. It is almost twenty years since the beginning of the SLS program.
